2007 Unsung Hero Awards

On March 6, 2007, state employees were presented with Texas Public Employee Association's 2007 Unsung Hero Awards.
This Award recognizes the outstanding public service and community contributions of individual state employees and group of state employees in specific categories.  Shown above, are this year's recipients, with Texas AgriLife Research and
Extension Center-Overton employee, Gary Hunt, at far left.

Gary Hunt
(below, left) receives the 2007 Unsung Hero Award, presented by Resident Director, Dr. Charles Long.

Mr. Hunt's award was in recognition of an individual or group that has provided outstanding volunteer outreach in their local, county, or regional community.

Here is an excerpt from the letter of nomination for Gary Hunt for the award:

"There is another side of Mr. Hunt....Gary is a member of his church's Disaster Relief Chain-saw Team.  Gary is known as a "blue hat", which indicates he has spent many weekends and money out of his own pocket traveling to training sessions.  As such, he has used his annual leave at different times to lead the disaster relief team to Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Vidor, TX, to assist in hurricane relief efforts.  Gary's team performs hurricane damage clean-up by removing fallen trees, limbs, and debris from houses, cars, yards.

"Team members verify that, even though they may be extremely busy, Gary always seems to have time to meet as many of the needs of the affected people as possible.  One team member stated...Gary will make sure the physical needs of the people for food, clothing, and lodging are met, but he also offers words of encouragement, prayer, and emotional support."
